Background information
The Forages Network is overseen by a
Network Coordinating Group (NCG), composed of the Working Group Chair plus a number of other coopted Network members.
The responsibilities of the Network Coordinating Group are:
- To formulate proposals, in consultation with the Working Group members, for the attention of the
ECPGR
Steering Committee on WG priorities and activities, following the planning and prioritizing mechanism
established by the SC
The Forages Network consists of only one Working Group on Forages, which has
developed several databases on various forages crops.
The activity of the Network currently coincides with the activity of the Working Group on Forages.
A meeting of the ECPGR Network Coordinating Groups took place in Bonn, Germany,
on 29-31 March 2006.

Presentations given during the NCG meeting
Suggestions for planning of Phase VIII (2009-2013) of the
Forages Network
The Forages NCG encouraged the Global
Crop Diversity Trust also to start work on some of the many forage species included in Annex I
of the International Treaty.
The NCG suggested starting work on Medicago, Trifolium, Lolium and Phleum as models for the other genera and is willing
to participate in this work.
An Ad hoc meeting of the Forages Network Coordinating Group jointly held with the European
Central Forage Database Managers was held in Lindau near Zurich, Switzerland, on 21-22 April 2005. Main objectives were to discuss progress
made by the Working Group on Forages and review the workplan for the remaining part of Phase VIII.
Opportunities to submit a project proposal to the EU on Medicago genetic resources, including the
identification of a core collection were discussed. A project proposal entitled "Building a European
collection of Medicago - Tailoring Medicago genetic resources for the 21st century" was
submitted to the second call of the EU Regulation (No 870/2004) published in April 2006, coordinated by
Jan Nedělník (RIFC, Troubsko, Czech Republic). The project passed the threshold but could not be funded
within the available budget.
