First meeting of the ECPGR Umbellifer Crops Working Group

The first meeting of the ECPGR Umbellifer Crops Working Group took place on 30 March - 1 April 2011 at Quedlinburg, Germany

Highlights

  • Tentative selection of 1415 carrot accessions to be proposed as European accessions (43% of total available list of cultivated accessions)
  • Lists of wild and landrace accessions and other Apiaceae to be analysed by June 2011
  • Characterization of wild relatives of carrot and celery planned for 2011-2013
  • Minimum descriptors (15) for characterization of carrot agreed
  • Minimum descriptors for characterization of celeriac (13), celery (12,), dill (7) and parsley (15) agreed
  • GRU-Warwick offered to continue maintenance of ECPGR Umbellifer Database, providing updated new structure by July 2011, including characterization descriptors
  • Emergency regeneration of carrot accessions at VIR under consideration by the Group
  • Minimum crop specific standards for umbellifer crops conservation under consideration: 40-50 plants for regeneration in isolation cages
  • E. Geoffriau (France) and C. Allender (UK) re-elected as as Chair and Vice-Chair respectively
