European Collection

The ECPGR Steering Committee has endorsed two important documents: "Revised procedure for selection of AEGIS collections" and "Guidelines for AEGIS Germplasm distribution" [more]

With the establishment of the European Collection and the inclusion of more than 11,000 accessions, AEGIS is preparing to enter into a new phase, i.e. the management of the Collection. In order to facilitate the further inclusion of new accessions and to strengthen its management, the ECPGR Steering Committee recently endorsed two important documents. These have been published on the AEGIS website:

Revised simplified procedure for the selection and flagging of accessions for the European Collection

This new procedure will provide an effective basis for the selection and inclusion of material in the European Collection by guiding countries and their genebanks in the process of selecting accessions for any given crop that originated in their respective country and that the country is formally prepared to include in the European Collection. This latter step will be implemented by flagging these accessions in EURISCO. By taking this route it is expected that only very limited duplicates will be included in the European Collection. The Working Groups are expected to regularly monitor the composition of the Collection and to identify any gaps or unwanted duplicates.

AEGIS Guidelines for Distribution of Material from the European Collection

These guidelines for the distribution of accessions from the European Collection by Associate Member genebanks are intended to streamline and harmonize the distribution practices. These guidelines are derived from the principles of the International Treaty and collect in a single document a description of the expected procedures to follow.  It is hoped that with these guidelines distribution practices become more transparent and effective and that European Collection genebanks are clearer on their ‘rights and obligations’.
