Legumes

EVA Legumes Network

Following up on communication activities in the frame of the Horizon projects BRESOV and INCREASE, the Grain legumes WG implemented the ECPGR grant scheme activity ForEVA (Fostering the need for implementation of the ECPGR European Evaluation Network (EVA) on grain legumes) a preparatory action to establish a new EVA network on grain legumes. Main activities of ForEVA included surveying the inventory of grain legumes available for evaluation, identifying stakeholders and possible private sector partners of the future network and developing a workplan and funding proposal based on partner’s priorities. The project brought together partners from 24 European genebanks and research institutes and more than 35 interested stakeholders from the public and private sector, jointly working towards establishment of this new EVA network.

The EVA Legumes network has started operations in 2024, organizing their work around seven legume crops: bean, chickpea, fava bean, lentil, lupine, pea and orphan legumes. Partners participate in multiple crop groups according to their interests and expertise, and each crop group identified a crop leader to guide the scientific aspects of the proposed work. Evaluations are planned in a variety of environments, including also on-farm trials in marginal areas, thus contributing to the promotion of legume diversity in the production of plant-based protein for a more sustainable diet in Europe, one of the priorities within the Farm2Fork strategy of the EU.

Strong collaborations with ongoing Horizon projects INCREASE, BELIS and Legume Generation ensure wide exploitation and dissemination of existing research outputs with a large pool of stakeholders.
